BAD BREATH

Bad breath, halitosis, trench mouth, morning breath.... whatever you want to call it, we've all suffered from it at some time and it can be highly unpleasant. In fact a quarter of adults have bad breath regularly. Who is better placed to deal with it than your Dentist or Hygienist?

90% of breath odors originate from the mouth. Rarely, some intestinal/ stomach complaints may cause a problem and sinusitis can cause halitosis.

Some foodstuffs are notorious for creating bad breath such as garlic, spicy foods, alcohol and, of course, the dreaded smokers' breath needs no elaboration.

The bad smell is caused by volatile sulphur compounds released by bacteria in the mouth. Gum disease/periodontitis is a main source of halitosis but the back of the tongue can often be the major culprit.

How can you tell if you have bad breath?

TRY  BREATH TEST:

  1. Lick the back of the hand with the very back of the tongue.... allow the hand to dry, then sniff.

  2. Pass a piece of dental floss between the upper molars, then smell the floss.

If you notice an unpleasant smell with either of the above, then you may have a problem!

Our dentists and hygienists are trained to recognize breath problems and can treat them accordingly, in confidence. They will offer intense oral hygiene instruction, dietary advice, prolonged cleaning and treatment of any underlying gum disease and direct patients in the use of special cleaning devices e.g. tongue cleaners.
